Equality Checklist

Since 1989, Equality Virginia has been the leading statewide advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Virginians. We believe in a truly inclusive Commonwealth where everyone is valued, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

With your help, Equality Virginia is using the following strategies to achieve full equality for all LGBT Virginians.

  • Connecting with Elected Officials
    • Through direct lobbying, meeting with the administration, hosting community candidate forums, and engaging thousands of Virginians through grassroots advocacy, EV ensures that our elected officials hear from and support Virginians who care about LGBT laws to end discrimination.
  • Engaging the Business Community
    • Through Virginia Competes, EV works with the state’s leading corporations and through Equality Means Business, EV works with local business owners who welcome LGBT employees and patrons.
  • Increasing Transgender Visibility
    • Through our statewide conference and support of local trans groups, EV provides resources, training, and support to Virginia’s transgender community. EV’s Transgender Advocacy Speakers Bureau connects with trained advocates with communities across the Commonwealth.
  • Strengthening Our Community
    • By building deeper partnerships between existing local LGBT and allied organizations, EV increases the capacity for grassroots advocacy, broader public education campaigns, and increased supporter numbers.
  • Creating Inclusive Schools
    • By utilizing Virginia’s anti-bullying law and Attorney General Herring’s opinion on local school board authority, EV works to implement fully inclusive bullying and nondiscrimination policies to make sure all LGBTQ youth and school employees are protected in Virginia.

Even with the success of marriage equality, there’s more work to be done to reach full equality for all Virginians. Click each item to find out the current status, actions we are taking, and ways to get involved.
