St. Mark's Episcopal Church: 2010 Community Award
Proud recipient of the very first EV Legends Community Award, lead by Reverend Peggy Buelow is St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Hampton, VA. For more than 20 years, St. Mark’s has opened its doors to everyone, creating a truly inclusive congregation.
The congregation is involved in the LGBT community and serves as members of Equality Virginia, HRBOR, a regular sponsor for Out in the Park and an active member of ACCESS Aids.
St. Mark's Episcopal Church enjoys a rich diversity, with members bringing a variety of heritages to our life and worship. The mission discerned as God's call for this parish celebrates this diversity as a unique gift, to be used to serve God in witnesssing to Christ in the world and in ministering to others in Christ's name.
Laurel Quarberg & Sarah Munford: 2010
Both Laurel and Sarah have been active members and supporters of Equality Virginia since its days as Virginians for Justice in the early 80’s, with Laurel serving on the Board of Directors for several terms. The two were instrumental in developing the first Legends dinner in 2006, and they remain active on the committees; Laurel co-chaired the events in 2007 and 2008. They have been strong supporters of Access Aids since its early years, co-hosting several “Dinner is Served” events and serving as ambassadors for “Dining Out for Life.” Their business, The New Leaf, was a founding member of HRBOR, the Hampton Roads Business Outreach, the only LGBT The Chamber of Commerce in Virginia, and they have been involved with Candii and Access Aides since the late 80’s.
Munford and Quarberg are frequent guest lecturers for The Chrysler Museum of Art and the Virginia Beach Public Library, as well as many local Hampton Roads area garden clubs. They donate their time and floral designs to The Virginia Symphony, The Chrysler Museum, The Virginia Stage Company, The Virginia Opera, Horizons, the YWCA, “Dress for Success”, and many other community organizations and educational institutions. In their spare time the two enjoy boating, camping, fishing and traveling—both domestic and, when time permits, internationally.
Cindy Cutler: 2009
Cindy is a founding member, former board member and committee chair of Hampton Roads Business OutReach (HRBOR), as well as past Committee Member for Equality Virginia Legends Events. Prior to the founding of HRBOR, she served on the Board of Directors of Full Circle AIDS Hospice and was instrumental in its merger with CANDI - ultimately emerging as ACCESS AIDS Care. On behalf of this organization, Cindy served as chairperson for several years of “Dinner is Served” and later played a leading role in introducing the nationally successful annual event, “Dining out for Life” to Hampton Roads. These events have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to alleviate the suffering of those afflicted with AIDS.
A staunch advocate for full equality for the LGBT community, Cindy’s leadership role with HRBOR was the natural evolution of her commitment to volunteerism. Cindy’s achievements were recognized by the YWCA in 2004 when she was honored as a “Woman of Distinction” in volunteerism.
